CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
Accomplishments over Marc's two terms:
- Helped institute the first District wide anti-bullying program
- Helped increase school improvement funds
- Called for decreases in non-school administrative positions to fund education
- Moved the District closer to the creation of an Early Childhood Education Center
- Consistently stood up for special education students and called for increases in support positions, funding, and worked to ensure that our 18-22 year old special needs students were not displaced during the high school renovations.
- Passed a motion welcoming and encouraging school councils to engage with the school committee
- Worked with colleague Luc Schuster to call for a District goal on 21st century skills
- Worked with colleague Patty Nolan to create the District's first "Citizen's Guide to the Budget" bringing a level of budget transparency never before seen in the District
- Worked with colleague Nancy Tauber to create a school climate District goal
- Created a School Climate Subcommittee to address the physical and emotional health of our schools
- Successfully advocated for heart defibrillators in schools
- Co-sponsored a motion to call for a roundtable on math curriculum
- Worked with Mayor Simmons to create "Boys to Men" group, bringing over 50 8th grade boys to meet with Harvard mentors to discuss physical and emotional health
- Advocated for increased funding for Breakthrough, Cambridge School Volunteers and City Sprouts
- Called for the enforcement of the non-idling law of school busses in front of schools and called for new busses to be environmentally friendly
